First China Model ASEAN Meeting Programme Began in Guilin, China

Guilin, 27 September 2016 – The First China Model ASEAN Meeting was officially opened yesterday at Guangxi Normal University (GXNU) in Guilin, China. The First China Model ASEAN Meeting or shortened as the First CMAM involved participation of around 75 Chinese students from the GXNU and 30 students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam studying at the GXNU and other universities in Guilin city.

70 undergraduate students and 10 university academic members were selected from 30 different universities across ASEAN to participate in the five-day programme of the Second ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting 2016 (2nd AFMAM 2016). They went through a vigorous selection process involving representatives from the Lao Permanent Mission to ASEAN, the ASEAN Secretariat as well as the ASEAN Foundation.

Following the successful First ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting (AFMAM) in 2015 held in Malaysia coinciding with the 27th ASEAN Summit, this year’s AFMAM will be taking place in Vientiane, Lao PDR on 1 – 7 October 2016. Vientiane is chosen because Lao PDR is the current ASEAN Chair.

Initiated by the ASEAN Foundation, the Model ASEAN Meeting (MAM) simulates how decision-makers of ASEAN member states address regional issues in a meeting. Participants who are university and high school students role-played senior officials, ministers, and leaders of ASEAN to learn about ASEAN’s mechanism in resolving and making decision upon a certain regional challenges
